Lavino
The Lavino railway station is the junction for the railway lines from Milan, the HSL North South, the ring around Bologna and the regional transport. The station started small and developed into a junction.
Since September 2004, twenty points are linked to POSS for the national infra manager Rete Ferroviara Italiana (RFI). Lavino is used as a POSS test site.

Napels
The regional transport company in Napels is Circumvesuviana. With 2500 employers, 118 electric trains, 100 stations along 200 kilometres of track and 200 auto buses, Circumvesuviana is responsible for the only high-frequency traffic structure between the city and the hinterland.

The POSS test site in Lavino proved to be so successful that RFI decided to have POSS monitor the total region of Bologna. In December 2004, Circumvesuviana assigned Strukton Rail to install POSS for the monitoring of 24 points. Ninety points in Napels were linked to POSS in 2006.

Result
The results were directly visible to the maintenance engineers at Circumvesuviana. To everybody’s surprise the system worked perfectly.

It became clear already after a few months that the number of switch failures could be reduced by 50%. POSS also showed other possible failures, such as security failures. POSS cannot restore those failures, but makes them visible. POSS therefore indirectly led to a reduction of failures by 60 to 70%. In addition, POSS makes it possible to directly check whether the failure has been restored.

POSS also turned out to be highly successful in Napels. The customer therefore decided to introduce POSS at 90 more stations, mainly at junctions where the inspection was not optimal. POSS was installed here at the end of 2006.
