Strukton Rail and its Swedish sister company Svensk Banproduktion have installed POSS at 150 points at 25 different locations in the Swedish underground network. The contract was signed at the end of December 2006; the points of the metro network were connected in March 2007. With the 150 Swedish points included, the total number of points monitored by POSS is about 1650 points, which makes POSS the world’s largest points monitoring system for switches.

Pilot project
An earlier POSS pilot project at one of the busiest junctions in the metro network of Sweden had shown good results. The customer could choose between different international suppliers, but selected Strukton Rail for the project because of the good price/quality ration, the flexibility of the system and the good service that Strukton Rail offers together with Banproduktion.

Assignment
It was the local knowledge of Banproduktion in combination with the knowledge of POSS and monitoring that provided just the right mix of knowledge and skills. Strukton Rail supplies the hardware, software and second-line service, and will continue to improve and further develop the monitoring site. Banproduktion supplies the local installations and provides for the maintenance and management of the hardware.

Decentralised measurement equipment has been installed in 25 relay houses. Seven mini POSS units and, for the first time, Micro POSS units were used for this purpose. The Micro POSS unit is a new smaller version of the measurement unit that can be used when a small number of measurement inputs is required.

The measurement data are sent to the central POSS system through a secured internet line. The data are processed by the central POSS server; the information is provided to the customer through the internet.

Banverket
In August 2006, Strukton Rail installed a test site in Södertalie Hamn for the Swedish national railway company Banverket. The test site involves 15 points.
