Since April 2005, Strukton Rail’s monitoring system of POSS is monitoring 70 points at the Central Station in Bern, Switzerland. Strukton Rail supports the customer, the Schweizerische Bundesbahn (SBB), with the use of this system. We analyse the POSS data about SBB’s switches and give advice about the maintenance and management of the switches and the possible failure causes.

Less failure minutes
Before the installation of POSS, travellers at Bern were faced with approximately 300 failure minutes a year due to point failures. These failures have now been reduced to practically zero. There are still a few point failures, but those cannot be prevented by POSS. The SBB has embedded POSS monitoring extremely well in the organisation en they are incorporating the results of POSS toughly in their new maintenance schedules.
