POSS has been implemented on approximately 9,000 points in the Netherlands. The systems are fully operational and other contractors in addition to Strukton Rail work with the system.
Good results
The first test site was put into operation in 1999. The results were promising: the annual percentage of failures was reduced by 28%.
Given the good results, Strukton Rail decided to further develop the POSS monitoring system and installed POSS on 150 'most critical’ points in the Amsterdam region.
Again, the results were favourable. A first analysis proved that the number of failures on points that were being monitored was reduced by 66%.
Nationwide implementation
Given the good results, the customer ProRail decided to have the POSS system implemented at all points along the entire Dutch railway network, involving approximately 9,000 points. Almost all POSS units are customised and different as to the servicing level.
Possible applications
POSS has various possible applications:
- Monitoring the condition of the track, points heating, train detection and civil objects
- Connection of critical components of bridge, tunnel and level crossing installationsÂ
- Connection of webcams
- Registration of the quality of the train axle short circuit
- Board-shore communication
The data are presented universally and are accessible through internet. Experts are able to monitor the situation online from any desired location and take the necessary measures.
