Karla Peijs christens new ultrasonic train

Karla Peijs, the Dutch Minister of Transport & Public Works, christened Eurailscout’s new ultrasonic rail inspection car UST 02 on Monday 11 April 2005. The train has been named after her as a tribute of esteem for her contribution to the maintenance of the Dutch railway network. By christening the UST 02, Peijs ended a brief working visit to Strukton Railinfra.

The new ultrasonic rail inspection car UST 02 presents a new generation of the ultrasonic trains and is the third in a row (UST 76, UST 96, UST 02) developed by the current company of Eurailscout. The UST 02 will be employed in the Netherlands, Germany and further abroad after having passed several tests.

Ultrasonic rail inspection cars are used to inspect rails. Cracks in the rails (among which the so-called ‘headchecks’) are found at an early stage.
The ultrasonic trains inspect the rails with high speeds. The UST 96 and UST 02 are able to carry out measurements under maximum speeds up to 100 km/h.

An important innovation of the UST 02 as opposed to the UST 96 is that ultrasonic measurements are combined with eddy-current measurements. This enables Eurailscout to not only inspect the bottom of the rails, but also the top.

Eurailscout is a participation of Strukton Railinfra. The company inspects the railway networks in e.g. the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Slovenia and Switzerland with inspection trains (such as the Jules, UFM 120, UFM 160, UST 96 and UST 02) and other measuring equipment.
