Renewal of 20 km of track within 9 days

Strukton Railinfra carried out a big track renewal project between the Dutch cities of Arnhem and Zutphen between 6 July and 15 July. The track was taken out of service for nine days, during which the work continued day and night. About 160 men were working on the track simultaneously every day. They replaced 20 km of track, 4 Harmelen crossings and 35 ordinary level crossings. Several of Strukton Railinfra's work trains were used for the job, including the track renewal train and ballast cleaner.

It was extremely hot during the work. The rails sometimes needed to be planed through on additional spots. The workers kept themselves cool with extra water and soft drinks.

To restrict the inconvenience for the people living in the neighbourhood and for the travellers, the entire project will be carried out during vacation periods. The first period was in July; the second period will be in October.

When the project has been completed, the track will need less maintenance effort and will be more quiet for the environment and more comfortable for the traveller.
