On 6 June 2006, a consortium of HTM Consultancy, Strukton Systems, Vialis Railway Systems and Wisselbouw Nederland signed a memorandum of understanding for the upgrading of the Ramleh Tram Line in Alexandria, Egypt. The signing act took place in The Hague, the Netherlands, and was attended by the Egyptian Minister of Transport, Mr. H.E. Eng. Mohamed L. Mansour, and the Dutch Minister of Transport & Public Works, Ms Karla Peijs.
The parties agreed to apply for an ORET grant at FMO for the renewal of the Ramleh Tram Line Alexandria in Egypt. They will perform a feasibility study for that aim and draw up a business plan. The ORET application should be finished mid 2007.
If the project gets qualified for an ORET grant, the Ramleh line will be renewed radically, involving 80 tram stops, 12,500 metres of single track, 28 switches, signalling, power supply, etc. The project will also involve the upgrading of the overhauling workshop and renewal of the light-rail vehicles. Strukton Systems might in that case be selected to deliver the complete electrical installations for the yet to be developed street cars and the delivery of the power supply.
ORET is the Dutch abbreviation of the Development Related Export Transactions Programme. With this programme, the Dutch government provides grants for the export of capital goods, services or work to development countries. Executed by FMO, ORET supports companies that want to be active in developing countries.
