Strukton Rail has installed a machine warning system on its C750 ballast cleaner and P95 renewal train. The warning system, made by Schweizer Electronic, consists of flashing lights and horns of 125 dB(A), exceeding the noise of the machine. Sound measurements have proved that the horn signal can be heard at any place beside the range of the machine.
DB Netz AG has granted permits for the warning systems on both the renewal train and the ballast cleaner. The warning system is compulsory in Germany as from 1 July 2011, to improve the safety conditions during projects where adjacent tracks remain open to traffic. Strukton Rail regularly uses the renewal train and ballast cleaner for renewal projects in Germany.
The warning system was especially designed for machines with high noise levels. Deutsche Bahn will install a warning system of Zollner or Schweizer Electronic next to the adjacent track, which will activate the warning system on the machine when a vehicle enters the adjacent track. The warning system on the machine will recognize the system next to the adjacent track and will give a similar warning sound. The horns will produce a short signal and the flashing lights will remain on until the vehicle on the adjacent track has passed.
Strukton Rail has installed the system in its own workshop in Zutphen (Netherlands).
