Catenary equipment

The catenary equipment is used for erecting and renewing catenary systems and the related maintenance. Strukton Railinfra Materieel has several innovative machines in addition to the traditional catenary equipment. Among these machines are the catenary renewal train Gemma and the hydraulic platform vehicle HBA XL, which can reach as high as 15 metres.

Gemma catenary renewal and construction train

The Gemma catenary renewal train is suitable for the renewal and construction of contact wires. The machine can draw two wires simultaneously. The 16/25 kV overhead wiring system is designed to pull the carrier cable and the contact wire in one process. The feeder line and earth cable can also be pulled in one process, depending on the distance between the centre of the track and the catenary support. The Gemma works twice as fast as the traditional method.

XL VRB 25 KL hydraulic platform vehicle

The XL VRB 25 KL hydraulic platform vehicle is used for new catenary installation. The hydraulic platform vehicle has a long working platform that can be extended at the front and rear for threading contact wire. The vehicle has three platforms, two of which are large and are limited to vertical movement. The small central platform can reach a working height of 10 metres and is able to extend to 3.2 metres outside the track. The platforms can be linked electrically, enabling the upward and downward motion of all three platforms to be synchronized with a single switch. There are two wire lifters in front of the small platform for raising the catenary or guiding the contact wire in the threading process.

The hydraulic platform vehicle has an operating station with a separate section that can accommodate up to four passengers. There is an automatic loading crane at the rear of the vehicle that can reach as far as the small front platform. The vehicles train brake is rated at 100 tons train weight.

VRB 17 KL automatic assembly wagon

The VRB 17 KL automatic assembly wagons can be used for catenary repair and maintenance. The wagons have two platforms, one large and limited to vertical motion, and one small. The small platform at the front of the wagon has a working height up to 8.2 metres and a reach of 2.6 metres outside the track.

The automatic assembly wagon has an operating station able to accommodate two passengers.

Stormobil LRB

The stormobils were specially built for work on the catenary supporting structure. They can also be used for catenary repair and maintenance. The vehicles have a hydraulic platform and a wire lifter. A stormobil has several underfloor compartments for storing materials and tools.

HBW 8 / 9 / 12 hydraulic platform wagon

The HBW 8 / 9 / 12 hydraulic platform wagon is used for new catenary installation and is a rail-bound vehicle with two fixed platforms and one small hydraulic platform. The hydraulic platform wagon has an automatic loading crane at one end that can reach as far as the small platform. One of the hydraulic platform wagons has a construction for raising the fixed platform railings from the loading floor.

RT 16-14 mobile crane

The liebherr RT 16-14 mobile crane has a caterpillar track and three-section hydraulic telescopic jib. The crane is designed mainly for working in the track from flat wagons. It is then simple to run the crane to its load and then move the combination rapidly along the track. The mobile crane has a load moment indicator, with various tables, for working in superelevation. The train also has a sector safety device.

If necessary, the crane can move sideways from its own wagon on two special ramps.

Assembly wagon

The assembly wagon has its own service room and working room, and a working platform on the roof. The wagon is used in combination with the 'Gemma' catenary renewal machine. The catenary is temporarily mounted to this wagon when the Gemma is pulling the wire. The beginning and end of the renewed wire is also fixed to the existing wire on this wagon.

Wire brush wagon

The wire brush wagon is used to brush oxidation and other dirt from the wire in order to guarantee good conduction of the voltage. The wire brush wagon is mostly used at railway yards, but can also be used on the main line.

Winding unit

This is a wagon with winding unit for winding the old wire of the catenary. The machine is mostly used in combination with the 'Gemma' catenary renewal machine. The unit is placed on a wagon which enables the unit to be transported in the (working) train.

Winding and unwinding unit

An unwinding unit is used for unwinding catenary wires. This unit (named René)) is also suitable for winding the old wire. The unit has the following characteristics:

  • Also suitable for tramways because the wheels can be exchanged
  • Equipped with push and draw handle for linking up railroad and rail vehicles.
  • Equipped with disc brakes on the axle for braking the reels
  • Equipped with two powered dividable units for winding the old wire.

Unwinding unit

An unwinding unit is used for unwinding catenary wires. The unwinding unit named 'Jos' has the following characteristics:

  • Also suitable for tramways because wheels can be replaced
  • Equipped with push and draw handle for linking up railroad or rail vehicles
  • Equipped with disc brakes on the axle for braking the reels

Railroad trailer with hydraulic arm

This railroad trailer (called 'BERT') can be used in a flexible way and is equipped with its own traction. The maximum height is 8 metres; the maximum working radius is 5 metres (if the height is 4.37 metres).
