Strukton Rail’s safety certificate extended for another five years

08 January 2014

In December 2013, Strukton Rail, in its capacity of rail carrier, was awarded a new five-year extension for its commission regulation EU 1158/2010 safety certificate by the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (IL&T).

“The audit period took place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with full openness on both sides. We’re proud of the achieved result, and see it as an acknowledgement by the Inspectorate that we keep a tight rein on our processes and are a solid and safe rail carrier. We take this certification as a challenge to continue providing our rail transport services in an efficient, reliable, predictable and, above all, safe manner.”

Aad Onderwater, Strukton Rail’s Manager of Logistics

Trial runs

Strukton Rail’s certification not only applies to the safe operation of rolling stock. A specific additional requirement satisfied by Strukton Rail in the certification is ‘the performance of trial runs with new and/or modified equipment’. This makes Strukton Rail one of the few rail carriers in the Netherlands that are allowed to conduct test runs overseen by trained and authorised trial run managers.

Rail companies that offer carriage services via the railway network need to be in possession of the commission regulation EU 1158/2010 safety certificate. The European Union recently tightened up requirements for this certification. In its evaluation of safety management systems, IL&T strictly adheres to the criteria set out in the European Regulation. Applicants need to convince the Inspectorate that the implementation of their safety management system will ensure the safety of their operations for a term of five years.
