DanTysk Offshore Substation

Strukton Systems bv has delivered an offshore substation for the DanTysk wind farm. The wind farm is situated in the North Sea, approximately 70 km west of the German island of Sylt, near Denmark. The wind farm includes 80 wind turbines of 3.6 MW each. The total capacity of the wind farm is 288 NW and can therefore, based on 2,500 kWh a year per household, supply ecofriendly electricity to approximately 400,000 German households.

Project details

Scope of delivery

The substation consists of several electrotechnical, mechanical and control systems. The main components include: 

  • Foundation (jacket anchored in the seabed)
  • Topside (jacket with offshore plates)
  • 2x 150/33kV 240 MVA transformers
  • 1x switch system 155 kV (GIS)
  • 2x switch systems 33 kV (GIS) including safety relay
  • STATCOM static compensation systems
  • SCADA, platform automation, including remote onshore operating systems
  • Emergency power generators
  • Fire alarm system and fire fighting systems
  • 400/230 V switch systems
  • AC/DC supply systems
  • UPS
  • Cable & rail systems
  • Measuring instruments & protection devices
  • Supply and installation of foundation and topside jacket

Project scope

The project scope of Strukton Systems included basic design, engineering, procurement, construction, project management, supervision, testing and commissioning, training, onshore & offshore work and logistics.

Strukton was responsible for the project strategy and operations, financial, commercial and technical management, safety, health and environmental management, prognosis and planning, work breakdown structure (WBS), budgeting and cost control, cash flow, contract management, progress, financial and managerial reporting, and risk management.

Strukton was also responsible for the functional testing of the systems and the commissioning of the platform, the so-called cold and hot commissioning.


Strukton Systems has drawn up a safety plan in consultation with the customer, stipulating measures to ensure that risks were reduced to an acceptable level. The safety plan applied to the construction, installation and commissioning and will apply to the entire lifespan including operation, maintenance and decommissioning. An HSE coordinator was designated by Strukton Systems to coordinate the activities of all parties involved.

DanTysk Wind Farm

The offshore substation consists of three layers including a helideck and is situated on a jacket which is installed on the seabed. The substation includes two 150/33 kV transformers and a 33 kV switch station connected to the cables from the wind turbines. The transformers are responsible for the transformation of the 33 kV coming from the wind turbines into the 155 kV which is required for the power transportation. The substation also houses emergency sleeping quarters, generators, SCADA and control systems. The substation is controlled from an onshore station.


DanTysk Offshore Wind GmbH is a joint venture between Vattenfall Europe Windkraft GmbH (51%) and Stadtwerke München GmbH (49%). Vattenfall will be responsible for the construction and operation of the wind farm.
