Electrical infra at airports in Tanzania

Strukton Systems’ business unit Energy Solutions has refurbished the entire electrical power infrastructure at the Tanzanian international airports of Dar-es- Salaam and Kilimanjaro. The contract was awarded by the Tanzanian Airports Authorities. The refurbishment was part of a programme for the airports to comply with the international standards. Both airports are fed from the local grids. The installation of emergency power generators sets was necessary to avoid power shutdowns in case of power outages from the mains.

Strukton replaced the entire switch yards and equipment in the airports’ main and substations. This involved the supply of 33kV switchgear, 11kV switchgear, power transformers, capacitor banks, diesel generator sets, DC Systems, 400VAC distribution boards, power cabling and control & protection system. The three existing emergency generator sets at Dar-es-Salaam were overhauled. All the existing power transformers at both airports were PCB contaminated. The dismantling and disposal was done in accordance with the applicable international standards.

Strukton Systems also replaced part of the runway approach lighting and the runway edge lighting. All required civil construction works was performed by the local subcontractor Noremco.
