Electrical systems for locomotives India

Strukton Rolling Stock designs and supplies complete electrical systems for 115 6 MW locomotives for Indian Railways. The customer is Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) in Bangalore. Since the middle of 2015 more than 100 locomotives are in operation with the Strukton power electronics systems. Several hundreds more locomotives will be built the coming years. The technology transfer programme allows the customer to source and build the power electronic systems locally in India.

Project details

The assignment consists of designing the traction system, auxiliary power system and vehicle control unit (VCU) for the 6MW locomotives. As part of the framework agreement, Strukton Rolling Stock supplied the first part of the order from the Netherlands and production has gradually been transferred to India.

In addition to designing and delivering electrical systems, technology transfer is an integral part of the contract. Strukton Rolling Stock designed the systems in cooperation with engineers from BHEL, subsequently delivering at least 115 systems to BHEL. BHEL engineers have gone through extensive training programmes in the field of power electronic design, electrical integration and production. The framework agreement has a term of 10 years.
