ERTMS Denmark

The consortium of Thales and Strukton Rail A/S is responsible for the turnkey system delivery of a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) level 2, baseline 3 for the Western part (Jutland) of the Danish rail network. The project scope includes the full design, manufacture, supply and installation of all infrastructure signalling systems including train detection, point machines, interlocking, radio block centre, cabling, technical object buildings, marker boards and traffic management, as well as 25 years maintenance.

Project details

The total track length involved is nearly 1200 km of rail lines across Jutland. This represents approximately 60% of the Danish rail network. The project, Fjernbane Infrastructure West, is one of the largest signalling contracts ever awarded in the world.

Strukton Rail is within the Thales-Strukton consortium responsible for all installation activities. One of the challenges with the project is to install the new signalling system with minimal disruption to the network operations and introduce it into service seamlessly.  Strukton’s local presence, installation and migration capability, and ERTMS experience combined with Thales’ capabilities form a strong Thales-Strukton consortium.

Signalling in Denmark

The Fjernbane Infrastructure West project is one of several projects in Banedanmark’s Signalling Programme to upgrade the entire mainline network with ERTMS by 2021 and the Copenhagen S-bane with CBTC by 2018. The programme represents a major change in technology intended to maximise the possibilities and benefits of re-signalling the Danish railway network.
