Riffgat Offshore Wind Farm

Strukton Systems bv has delivered an offshore substation for the offshore Riffgat wind farm. The wind farm is situated in the German part of the North Sea, near the island of Borkum. With a total installed capacity of 108 megawatts (MW), the wind farm will supply ecofriendly electricity to approximately 100,000 German households.

This multidisciplinary turnkey contract included the design, engineering, procurement, fabrication and offshore transport and installation, system integration and commissioning of a 155/33kV offshore substation. The substation supports the connection of thirty 3.6 KW wind turbines to TenneT’s German high-voltage grid. As the systems integrator, Strukton Systems was responsible for the integral functioning, commissioning and delivery of the offshore substation. The project was realised in partnership with Hollandia bv.

The project was completed according to plan and to the satisfaction of the customer.

Project details

Scope of delivery

The substation consists of various electrical installations, mechanical installations and operating plants. The main components include:

  • 2x 75MVA 155/33kV transformers
  • 1x 155kV switchgear(GIS)
  • 2x 33kV switchgear (GIS) with protection relay
  • 2x 1000kVA 33/0.4kV transformers
  • 2x 1000kVA 33kV compensation reactors
  • 3x emergency power generators (1x 185kVA, 2x 1000kVA)
  • Diesel storage and loading system
  • Glass fibre and data network
  • Instrumentation and fire protection cables
  • Cable trays and ladder courses
  • HVAC installation, chillers, dry-coolers, piping
  • Oil/water separator
  • Desalting installation
  • 5 Ton platform crane
  • Platform automation, including onshore remote operating systems
  • Helicopter deck, AIS and obstruction lighting

Engineering

The project scope included the complete engineering, from basic design up to and including implementation design. This included:

  • The jacket for the platform and foundation
  • High-voltage installation (primary and secondary)
  • HVAC, cooling and diesel systems
  • Test plans and certification of all systems delivered

Strukton Systems was also responsible for the functional testing and commissioning of the platform, the so-called cold and hot commissioning.

Safety

Strukton Systems has drawn up a safety plan in consultation with the customer, stipulating measures to ensure that risks were reduced to an acceptable level. The safety plan applied to the construction, installation and commissioning and will apply to the entire lifespan including operation, maintenance and decommissioning. An HSE coordinator was designated by Strukton Systems to coordinate the activities of all parties involved.
